OP'ED: EME's 'Get Down Tonight' video f/ WizKid, Banky W. & Skales is a fail!
Check the 'get down tonight' video before the op'ed article below:
From the opening montage of Banky W, Skales and WizKid arriving at a houseparty after rocking an E.M.E concert in London, to the closing scene of Banky W throwing up double dubs, this video is one that might as well have remained on the cutting room floor.
Maybe I’m jaded because I still think “Pakurumo” is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen (from Nigeria or anywhere else in the world for that matter), but I personally think this strategy by E.M.E of releasing cookie-cutter videos every week is not strengthening their brand but severely weakening it.
For example, it makes no sense to announce ‘It’s the after party’ at the beginning of the video, only to mutate from houseparty to warehouse to concert stage, perhaps director Mr. Moe Musa might want to watch the late, great Biggie’s video for ‘One More Chance’ to understand how to properly shoot a house party themed vid.
From an audio perspective, the use of autotune does not help matters either, personally I was kind of excited when Skales (who is dressing like WizKid lite) started rapping and his voice was autotune free, but alas even in his case, autotune was used and the last part of the 16 (mediocre) bars he spit. Whatever happened to using one’s natural voice on wax (or the digital equivalent)?
Overall, my advice to the entire E.M.E crew, is to heed the old adage of sometimes ‘less is more’, indeed it might be time to sit back, restrategize and put out a few videos that will stand the test of time as opposed to a bunch of videos that people forget about a day or two after they watch them, that is except you’re Rick Ross or Fiddy
